Developing a New Line of Business
The Company:
New Office Temps is a 23 year old temporary staffing and recruiting agency in downtown Chicago. Chuck Smith (a former temp at the agency) is the majority owner of New Office, having purchased controlling interest in 1999. Chuck has been a TAB member since 2002.
The Business Issue:
Shortly before joining TAB, New Office had developed web-based software (NewHire) to help their recuriters and clients better manage the recruiting process. The software enabled the development of a custom online application for the job being filled, along with searching, selecting and sharing of information about applicants. Chuck believed there was a market for this product, but needed help in how to take advantage of the opportunity.
TAB Board and Coaching Session Impact:
Chuck and his facilitator, Paul Detlefs, spent many of their coaching sessions working on aspects of the NewHire business, including development of several product and service "packages", pricing, a sales channel strategy, and a multi-year financial plan.
Chuck's TAB Board provided feedback on these developments, as well as on marketing materials and demonstrations of the software. A number of them also were able to provide feedback based on using the system.
Business Result:
The NewHire line of business has grown dramatically. In early 2008, the revenues from the NewHire line of business exceeded that from the temp business, and this line of business is also more profitable.
